15 Days in Nepal
Starting October 18th, 2023
Starts and Finishes in Kathmandu
Group Size: 8
Himalayan highs without the trekking! Immerse yourself in the art of photography while exploring the culture of Kathmandu Valley and the majestic Annapurna mountains. It's a 15 day photographic tour led by two of the most experienced photographers in the Himalayas. We schedule this trip annually for the early Winter when the air is clear and cool in the mountains - the best time for photographers.
From the Streets of Kathmandu to the Majestic Annapurna Mountains
Days 1-2 | Arrival in Kathmandu | 4600’
Our meeting point is Kathmandu, where we get to meet each other and go over final details before heading west into the Annapurna Ranges. Airport transfers are included. We have a full day together in Kathmandu to talk about photography and share a session on capturing light. We visit a couple of our favorite temples for dawn and dusk, when the light is doing lovely things. If you haven’t been to Nepal before we recommend arriving a day or two early to acclimate to the culture and time zone.
Days 3-4 | Bhaktapur | 4600’
We spend two nights in the city of Bhaktapur, one of the former kingdoms in the Kathmandu Valley. “The City of Devotees” still retains its medieval charm and we explore the laneways and Newari architecture with the benefit of late afternoon and early morning light. Bhaktapur gives us a glimpse of what Kathmandu Valley was once like, before it became so busy. At dusk and dawn the streets fill with local produce vendors selling their goods to residents, adding an intimate range of subjects for our photography.
Day 5 | Pokhara | 2700’
We get in one more dawn shoot in the Durbar Square of Bhaktapur before heading to Pokhara. There are no afternoon flights into the mountains, so we have to overnight in Pokhara before heading on the next morning. We make sure we have a nice hotel room and one last chance to shop for any additional warm gear.
Days 6-7 | Marpha | 8925’
The pace is easy for these two days, but there are opportunities for short hikes for those who want to stretch the legs. Accommodation for these two days is clean but simple, taking advantage of some local guesthouses that offer good food and great access to photographic inspiration. Aside from a special scenic location in the village, we also plan on walking through the village of Tukuche lower down the valley, and capturing scenes of the river and ancient streets.
Days 8-11 | Kagbeni | 9200’
We now head deeper into the former Mustang Kingdom where the landscape presents ever changing views of the Annapurnas and their peaks. Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri present themselves in various facades as we head into and out of Jomsom. We share some of our favorite photographic locations along the way, making the most of the morning light. Some sections of the road are better suited to trekkers than jeeps, so hold onto your pack and enjoy the ride. Once we arrive in Kagbeni we’ll have some stunning sunrise opportunities, colorful vistas and a Tibetan monastery to photograph. Kagbeni sits at an altitude of 2750m.
Day 12 | Jomsom | 9000’
We spend the morning visiting another village near Jomsom with stunning Himalayan views, then return to our accommodation near the airport after lunch. We have a favorite guesthouse here that serves great fresh crushed apple juice, fluffy pancakes and potato & cheese momos. We catch up on some image processing before flying out very early the next morning. We also get one last chance to shoot the peaks of Nilgiri at dusk and dawn as our guesthouse in Jomsom provides excellent views of these ranges.
Days 13-15 | Kathmandu | 4600’
We fly from Jomsom to Kathmandu and enjoy a little pampering after the dust and elevation of the Annapurnas. Our final full day in Kathmandu will give us a chance to explore the most significant and chaotic Hindu temple of the valley, Pashupatinath. We’ll meet the holy men and learn about the art of cremation. It’s a unique and very public sacred site.
Day 15 | Departure
On the final day we head to the airport at Kathmandu and fly home. Your transfer to the airport is included and we recommend you arrange flights to depart around lunchtime or soon after.
Please read the PDF brochure for full details on the itinerary, accommodations and inclusions.
Tour Highlights
What Makes this Photo Tour so Unique?
An uncommon advantage of our photography tours, is that you will be accompanied by two professional photographers at all times, ready to help in any way you need. The most unique aspect of this style of travel is the emphasis on taking the travel slowly, to have time in fewer places and have more meaningful experiences in those places. We travel by jeeps into the mountains, free to stop and take photos when something presents itself. This is not a package tour designed for the masses, it’s a photographic journey designed for photographers, by photographers.

Nepal Itinerary Videos
Himalayan Highs
Every winter I head to the Himalayas for sunshine and inspiration. Have a look at what a week in the Annapurnas of Nepal looks like through the lens of the photographer.
Kathmandu Valley
We start the Nepal adventure in Kathmandu Valley and lay down a foundation of ideas and inspiration that continue for the rest of the journey.
Morning Market
This market supplies both wholesale and retail, with cycling vendors rolling up all morning to load up their baskets before heading out into the city. This visit I also spent a lot of time with the chai stand and the light was very nice for it :)

FAQ’s About Nepal
-
It's been ten plus years since we first started guiding trips to Nepal. Our favorite season is winter when the air is cool and dry in the mountains, giving clear views of snow-capped mountains.
-
Not much at all. All meals, permits and ground transport are covered already. If you're not buying much in the way of souvenirs then $20 for a sim card and maybe another $50 for drinks should cover the basics. We also provide a more detailed "Pre-Departure Pack" when you book in the tour.
-
No, most of the walking is very very easy. There are a few steep bits that are very short, but we also have the added impact of a little altitude in the mix. So we do everything gentle, and every walk is optional.
-
The terrain in Nepal is always uneven, which means solid walking boots with high ankle support is recommended. We don't do heavy walks on our photography tours, but we do expect to traverse dusty and rocky trails.
-
Very cold. We travel on the edges of winter and the night air can drop to zero degrees. Guesthouses are energy poor and offer no heating, so we supply sleeping bags for additional warmth where necessary. Some people feel the cold more than others, while some people get too warm inside the sleeping bags. Please note that not all our itineraries travel to higher elevations or use trekkers guesthouses.
-
Yes. Everywhere we travel is good for electricity, although the supply can drop out for hours at a time. Charging camera batteries or a laptop each day is never a problem.
-
Yes there are mobile networks at every place we stay on the tour. The networks do vary so roaming connections may vary also. We recommend a local sim-card for cheap internet access as hotel internet is often slow.
-
We supply all travelers with a detailed Pre-Departure Pack when they book for a tour, which includes how to apply for "Visa on Arrival" and a lot of other information such as help with packing. For more general information we recommend you read through the PDF brochures.
-
Masks are a part of daily life in Nepal and will be suggested in many public settings. We ask that all travelers obey all local public health regulations during the trip. Will keep you updated as these requirements have loosened for 2023.
